I started volunteering on an organic farm in New Mexico in 2012. As a nature photographer who loves animals and also enjoys travel and writing, it seemed like a good idea to offer my new skills to expand services. I always liked to assist fellow pet owners, travelers, educators, so why not help farming folk who may need a break during a hectic season?
I've always made a modest living as a pet sitter and visual artist. When I nearly lost my business due to Covid lockdowns, I started to reimagine my extended services offerings in order to fast track my modest retirement goals.
The only amenity I absolutely require for stays is access to the internet so I may market my services. Access to a farm vehicle as backup for veterinary emergencies is always a good plan. An emergency credit card or farm store credit account for medicine/feed may be warranted, especially during winter.
Extended farm rates: $50 a day flat rate up to 14 days. If you're traveling more than two weeks the monthly rate kicks in which is $700. You pay for two weeks and get another two for free. That's 14 days extra travel!
Extended pet sit rates: $40 a day, flat rate up to 14 days. If you travel longer than two weeks, the monthly rate caps at $560. Travel 4 weeks for the price of two!
If you plan to be away longer than a month, the cap is always the same. Two weeks/14 days: $700 or $560, then two weeks free. Another two weeks/14 days: $700 or $560, then another two weeks free, and so on. If you arrive home during a free week, we're good! If you arrive during a pay cycle, you pay only for days you were away in that cycle.
I have watched over small farms, homesteads with goats, chickens, ducks (even an emu!), as well as a modest home with 3 pets, pond environs and permaculture gardens. My longest sit was 6 months long for a traveling educator from IU. Please see my testimonials for more information!
